Charter Flights

It’s been more than a year since I’ve discovered a new talent for the university I work for. The last talent I found made it to the NBA—even If he was just a second round draft pick, I couldn’t be prouder. My story starts one morning when I was having my breakfast in the local diner. I was having the usual, bacon and eggs and a cup of strong black coffee. My head feels like it’s ready to burst—I drank more than two bottles of tequila. Anyway, I was reading the sports section of the morning paper when I saw this article regarding a high school kid, 6’2” Filipino-American from Tennessee, who scored 92 points in a high school game. The reporter said that the kid was fast, got great technique, and wanted to go to college but didn’t have the money. “Hmm…” I said, ”could be worth looking into…” so drank down the last gulp of my coffee and asked Irene for the tab.

I flew to Tennessee that afternoon, flying through a charter flight because I didn’t want to waste any time. I was just in time to watch the kid playing ball at his high school gym. The moment I stepped inside the place, I knew that that was him. He had an air about him, this kid. All eyes were watching every move he made, he had absolute grace—dribbling to the right, to the left—he would avoid three guards and make the basket. “This kid’s got a great talent” I said to myself.

After the practice, I went over and introduced myself. “I’m Mr. Mugsy, I’m a talent scout and I flew through jet charter as soon as I read about you in the morning paper. How would you like to play for my school?” He could barely hide his excitement, he asked me to come to his house and talk to his parents.
A week later, the kid and I flew back here on an New Flight Charters jet to play for my college.
